The History and Origin of the Original 8-Striped Rainbow Flag
The original 8-striped Rainbow Flag, created in 1978, is the first official Pride flag and a key symbol of LGBTQ+ visibility, diversity, and unity. Gilbert Baker, an openly gay artist and activist in San Francisco, designed this flag as a joyful and liberating symbol.
Meaning of the Eight Colors
Together, these colors symbolized the full spectrum of human identity, creativity, and emotion, reflecting the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community itself.
Debut at San Francisco Pride, 1978
The flag first flew at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978. Baker and a team of volunteers hand-dyed and stitched the first flags by hand.
Encouraged in part by Harvey Milk.
Encouraged and supported by Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. Milk believed the community needed a hopeful and affirming symbol to represent liberation and collective identity.
Why the Flag Changed Over Time
After Harvey Milk’s assassination in 1978, demand for the flag surged, but production limitations forced changes. Firstly manufacturers struggled to source hot p-ink fabric. Secondly, the turquoise stripe was removed to create an even number of stripes for display on street lamps, consequently leading to the now-familiar six-striped version.
Although this change created the six-striped version that many people recognize today, the original 8-striped flag still plays an important role in LGBTQ+ history and Pride culture.
